This course will examine the United States’ 19th-century transformation, beginning with the Louisiana Purchase and including the relocation of Native tribes, annexation of Texas, and the Mexican-American War. It explores the expansion of slavery, the Indian Wars, and the closing of the frontier, emphasizing the roles of race, religion, and economic ambition. The course highlights American exceptionalism and its influence on national identity and policy.
