F4B Dust, Dreams & Desperation: Stories of the American West
Literature & Writing | Registration opens 9/2/2026 12:00 AM
Since the nation’s founding, Americans have had an insatiable desire for new experiences and opportunities. This restlessness has manifested itself in many ways; the lure of the American West has prompted many to leave behind the familiar and migrate, first to the Midwestern plains, then further west. This course explores the excitement of those starting a new life by heading west and the hardships, struggles, and sometimes tragedies many of them encountered. Stories in excerpts by such writers as Bret Harte, Jack London, Willa Cather, and John Steinbeck will provide insight into this unique aspect of the American character.
