Tea & Talk: Porous Pavements: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
By Brad Putnam, Bucknell University
Pavements are more than just roads. They’re critical elements of our transportation infrastructure, shaping our way of life by the connections they create. By design, pavements have traditionally been impermeable (meaning water can’t pass through them), which can lead to flooding, stormwater pollution, and dangerous driving conditions. Porous pavements aim to mitigate these issues. This presentation provides an accessible overview of pavement types and materials, introduces the basics of porous pavements, and explores real-world examples—highlighting lessons from both success stories and cautionary tales—the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Brad Putman is Richard E. Garman Dean of the College of Engineering at Bucknell. His research is focused on construction materials and pavement engineering.
