663 Who Says Letter Writing is a Lost Art?

Class | Registration opens 8/4/2025 12:00 AM

At the suggestion of a number of former BILL students, Rachael has created this course about the art and history of letter writing. A brief history of letter writing, its use as correspondence, implements used, and informal v. formal formats will be covered, as well as a consideration of collections of letters and letters that changed the world.

Each week’s lesson will involve reading and discussing samples of letters on these aspects of letter writing. Some of the letters to be shared will include those of B. Potter, W. Churchill, Claudia Severa, Galileo, Abagail Adams, but also those to and from Highlights Magazine for Kids. We’ll look at the telegram telling of the attack on Pearl Harbor, a letter to Oppenheimer, another from a recording studio refusing to record the Beatles, and one concerning whistleblowers.

Together, we will discuss and explore, read and write letters using and expanding our own personal experiences. We will also discover our own preferences for writing implements and space. Part of each class will consist of short lecture, letter reading, writing and sharing. It will be an interesting class. Come join us!

  • Required materials: Bring your favorite writing instruments and a notebook/journal; writing will be required.
