675 The Art of the Brush: A Journey Into Japanese Calligraphy (Shodoh)

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Japanese brush calligraphy, or ?? (shodoh). This 6-week course is designed for people who have no experience with brush calligraphy or Japanese language, but those with some experience who wish to hone their skills are also welcome. The course endeavors to allow participants to explore the harmony of brush, ink, and paper while learning about Japanese culture and tradition through this meditative art form. Those seeking to express creativity, cultivate mindfulness, or learn a new skill, are encouraged to delve into the world of brush calligraphy.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  1. Understand the history, philosophy, and cultural significance of shodoh.
  2. Master foundational brush strokes and techniques.
  3. Create personalized calligraphy projects, such as nameplates, poems, or artwork.
  4. Develop an appreciation for shodoh as both an art form and a mindfulness practice.

By the end of the course, participants will take home:

  • A portfolio of their calligraphy pieces.
  • A deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
  • A newfound appreciation for the meditative art of Shodoh.

This course is open to all, regardless of experience. Ideal for art enthusiasts, language learners, and anyone interested in Japanese culture or seeking a calming, creative outlet.

  • Participants should wear informal, dark colored clothing, or an apron that gives adequate coverage. 
  • Required materials: please purchase for class

    • A calligraphy brush (fude).
    • Calligraphy paper (hanshi).

Elizabeth Armstrong

ELIZABETH ARMSTRONG, a Bucknell professor emerita, taught in the East Asian Studies Department for 25 years. She has offered Japanese language at all levels, Translation Studies and Brush Calligraphy. In addition to her academic endeavors, she is the published translator of Japanese literature and is currently working on a book on Pre-WWII film. Elizabeth is known for being an instructor attentive to students’ varied learning styles, and offers a warm welcome to all who wish to engage in the life of the mind and hands-on practica.
