677 A History of Russian Opera
Class | Available (Membership Required)
Russian composers have made significant contributions to the world of opera since the works of Mikhail Glinka [1804-1857]. We will listen to excerpts from Russian operas well-known outside Russia: e.g. those byTchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Borodin, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich as well as Russian operas that are seldom heard outside of Russia: e. g. those by Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rebikov, Rachmaninov and others. The course is designed to appeal to those interested in opera, music, and Russian culture.
There are no required texts for this class. Gary will provide lecture notes for this music survey course.
