717 Daring to Meet Bram Stoker's Dracula

Nearly everyone knows about the most portrayed literary character in the world, what he’s “allergic” to and how to kill him. But how many have bravely trod the foul literary soil from which he sprang—the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker? Struck by the atmospheric setting, the variety of characters, the suspenseful plot and the narrative style, LuAnn O’Connell invites you to delve into this classic:
“In the first five weeks, we will read and discuss Dracula by Bram Stoker, exploring actual and legendary inspirations; examining themes, motifs and screen depictions; and armchair traveling to the settings. The sixth week, we will cower before one of the better Dracula movies together. Depending on the edition you get, there will be around 60-90 pages of reading weekly, discussion, some in-class writing and lecture.”
Participants are expected to bring paper and writing tools; some writing will be required.

Stoker, Bram. Dracula (any unabridged edition). This text is now out of copyright; there are numerous editions to choose from, but be sure not to select one that has been abridged. LUANN O’CONNELL has taught BILL classes on the character Sherlock Holmes and author Edgar Allan Poe. She reads extensively in diverse genres and loves travel, combining these interests by creating a Sherlock Holmes sitting room and a medieval bedchamber in her home.
