725 The Art of the Brush: A Journey Into Japanese Calligraphy (Shodoh)

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Japanese brush calligraphy, or ?? (shodoh). This four-week course is designed for people who have no experience with brush calligraphy or Japanese language; however, those with some experience who wish to hone their skills are welcome. The course looks at Japanese culture and tradition through the lens of shodoh, focusing on the harmony of brush and ink. Those seeking to express creativity, cultivate mindfulness or learn a new skill are encouraged to join this journey to the world of brush calligraphy.
The following materials will be required:
- A calligraphy brush (fude)
- Black ink (sumi)
- Inkstone (suzuri)
- Calligraphy paper (hanshi)
The instructor will confer with Brushstrokes Gallery, Art Supplies & Framing in downtown Lewisburg, one location at which you can procure these supplies. The paper for final editions of the students’ work will be provided by Elizabeth Armstrong.
Elizabeth Armstrong
ELIZABETH ARMSTRONG, a Bucknell professor emerita, taught in the East Asian Studies department for 25 years. She has offered Japanese language at all levels and courses in translation studies and brush calligraphy. In addition to her academic endeavors, she is a published translator of Japanese literature and is currently working on a book on pre-World War II film. Elizabeth is known for being an instructor attentive to students’ varied learning styles, and she offers a warm welcome to all who wish to engage in the life of the mind and hands-on practice.
