726 Keeping Memories Alive: An Introduction to Scrapbooking

Both men and women scrapbook. People make scrapbooks about all kinds of memories. Scrapbooks can be about your travels, weddings, children and grandchildren. You can make books about your pets, the concerts you have attended, or your grandmother's quilts. Any memories you want to preserve can be made into a scrapbook. Scrapbooks are for you, your loved ones and your future generations to enjoy.
This special-interest course will cover the history of scrapbooking and why people have continued to create scrapbooks even now, in our busy world filled with technology. You will experience a hands-on classroom approach where you will create a series of pages with your very own photos. Learn about scrapbooking and consider layout ideas, color theory and how to select colors, and what paper types and patterns can enhance your photos on your page layouts, what kinds of things can go into a scrapbook, paper storage, journaling and other ideas – all through a series of PowerPoint slides, group discussions and hands-on experiences. You will be creating your own individual pages for a 12"x12" album which you will purchase.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
To the first meeting, you should bring the following:
- A notebook and pen/pencil to take notes and sketch ideas.
- One photo to work with.
- One piece of 12x12 inch cardstock and several pieces of patterned paper that match some of the colors in your photo.
- A 12-inch ruler with 1/4- or 1/8-inch markings.
Buying quality materials will reduce future costs of replacing inferior equipment, especially paper cutters, which are particularly vulnerable to heavy usage. Expect to also buy/gather the following items after the first session and an in-depth discussion of what you will need to purchase for your tool kit for the remainder of the course:
- A container for your tools and a bag to carry everything
- Double-sided tape runner (e.g., Towbow)
- Paper cutter with swing-out arm for large papers (recommended: Fiskars or Creative Memories brands)
- Pencil and pencil sharpener
- Small tweezers
- Kneaded eraser – this special eraser does not leave bits on the paper after use
- Journaling markers or pens
- 12”x12” scrapbook
- Pages to insert into the scrapbook – clear drop-in pages or solid pages
- Variety of 12”x12” colored cardstock and patterned papers that please your eye – never use something that does not bring joy!
