This Special Presentation is a Lunch & Learn. You are viewing the program description for the LECTURE:
The Collapse of the Modern World Trading System
In the first 70 years after World War II, the world trading system gradually moved, under U.S. leadership, in the direction of liberalization. Over the past decade, that has changed as the United Kingdom left the European Union and President Trump engaged in a trade war with China and put tariffs on most of the world. The new U.S. tariffs in 2025 violated all the core principles enshrined in the World Trade Organization, and the WTO has proved powerless to stop the protectionist U.S. trade policies. This talk discusses U.S. trade policy under Trump and how it is fundamentally reshaping the modern world trading system.
CHRIS MAGEE began at Bucknell University in 2001 and has been a full professor since 2012. For the past four years he was co-chair of the Department of Economics. Magee teaches principles of economics, econometrics, a foundation seminar titled The Globalization Debate, and a senior seminar on international trade. His research interests include international trade, lobbying, international interactions, and home field advantage in sports. He has 35 publications in journals such as Journal of International Economics, Economics & Politics, Public Choice, International Studies Quarterly and International Interactions.
