Have you ever considered the color green? How is green created? Have you thought about why the color white so often instills both terror and awe in the human mind?

This creative course will explore the fascinating history, science, symbolism and cultural impact of color. Primarily using the text The Secret Lives of Color by Kassia St.Clair, students will investigate the origins and meanings of pigments across time and place, from ancient Lapis Lazuli and Tyrian purple to synthetic dyes and contemporary color trends.

Through readings, discussions, visual analysis and creative projects students will examine how artists, scientists and societies have shaped the way color is produced, valued and understood. Together we will explore topics such as where pigments actually come from, how color influences perception, symbolism in pigments, as well as the evolution of artistic materials and techniques in relationship to color.

Students will create small color related creative projects throughout the duration of the course.

Participant are expected to have computer literacy/access and email. Some writing will be required.
