Discover the History of the Oconee Nuclear Station

Excursion | Available (Membership Required)

Learn about the history of Duke Energy’s Keowee-Toxaway Project and Oconee Nuclear Station. When completed in the mid-1970s, this project included the largest nuclear power plant in the world and won the 1975 American Society of Civil Engineers’ Outstanding Achievement Award. The station has generated more than 500 million megawatt-hours of electricity and is "the first nuclear station in the United States to achieve this milestone” according to its website. While visiting, we’ll also visit an exact replica of an Oconee Nuclear Station control room, which is a training simulator for nuclear operators.
