From Fort to Falls: Explore Oconee Station & Station Cove
Excursion | FULL (Membership Required)
Oconee Station offers a glimpse into life on South Carolina’s early frontier. Come with us to explore South Carolina’s frontier past at Oconee Station, a historic site that once served as a military outpost and later a trading post in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The park features two preserved structures well worth seeing:
• Oconee Station – A stone blockhouse built around 1792 by the South Carolina State Militia to defend against Cherokee and Creek attacks. It later served as a kitchen for the nearby residence.
• The William Richards House – Built in 1805 by Irish immigrant William Richards, this home was occupied into the 1960s and used as a summer retreat through the 1970s.
Following the tour and brief lunch break, OLLI Member Meg Williamson will lead the group on an easy rated 1.5-mile hike to Station Cove Falls to see a stepped 60-foot waterfall that forms from headwaters atop Station Mountain.
