We Do It Different Down Here
In-Person Class | Registration opens Monday, December 15, 2025 9:00 AM
In so many ways South Carolina is a fascinating state; we do things our own way. Take our government, for example. No other state has county delegations that consist of legislators exercising control over county affairs and school districts. Also, compared to other states, our college tuition is very high and our gas tax is very low. Here’s another head-scratcher: our property tax triples the tax burden on identical houses if one is rented while the other is owner-occupied. And that’s just for starters! Come have some fun learning about what “doing things our own way” means here in your adopted (or native!) state and local government. Professor Ulbrich will help you understand not just the what, but the historical why of how things are the way they are in South Carolina.
Holley Ulbrich is a frequent OLLI teacher. A retired economics professor at Clemson University and a long-time leader in state and local Leagues of Women Voters, Holley has extensive experience in South Carolina state and local government as a teacher, researcher, and even city council member.
