Samurai-Learning "The Way of the Sword"

In-Person Class | Available (Membership Required)

Students will actively engage in learning Iaido through a balance of history, philosophy, and physical practice. Participation includes guided discussions on Samurai history, virtues, and sword training. The 450-year lineage of Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu Iaido will be discussed with its emphasis on tradition and effective techniques while reinforcing respect, virtue, and mindfulness. Hands-on activities focus on safety, etiquette, identifying, cleaning, and gripping the katana. Students will practice the six steps to draw, cut, and sheath the sword. Students will train in on-guard positions, the eight fundamental cuts, blocking, parrying, thrusting, body movement and footwork. Classes emphasize precision, efficiency, and meditative focus through standing kata, allowing students of all ages to develop coordination, control, and calm awareness. Wooden Bokken (sword), scabbard, and white belt will be provided. Students will need to wear comfortable loose clothing or gym clothes, and comfortable shoes such as sneakers.
