Introduction to Pottery Wheel

In-Person Class | Registration opens Monday, August 17, 2026 9:00 AM

OLLI is proud to partner with the Holly Springs Center to offer this class.

Discover the art and joy of pottery in this fun, hands-on class designed specifically for beginners. Over the course of three hours, you'll learn the fundamentals of working on the potter's wheel, including centering clay, opening forms, pulling walls, and shaping simple vessels such as bowls or cups. No prior experience is necessary. Your instructor will guide you through each step of the process, helping you develop confidence and basic wheel-throwing skills in a relaxed and supportive environment. Expect to get your hands dirty while exploring the creative possibilities of clay. All materials and tools are provided. By the end of class, you'll have created several pieces and gained a solid introduction to the pottery-making process. Whether you're looking to try something new, explore a creative hobby, or see if pottery is right for you, this workshop is the perfect place to start. Two weeks after the class, you'll return for a one-hour glazing lesson, where you'll learn how to finish and decorate your fired pieces. If you cannot return for the second session, your instructor will glaze the pottery for you.

Meredith Sargent is a retired high school Spanish teacher who always wanted to work in clay. Retirement afforded her the time and opportunity to finally pursue it and do so with passion. Now, after a few years of relentlessly practicing and creating pottery, she has wedded her love of teaching with her love of clay.
