No Passport Required: The Global History and Politics of Tourism
While many of us look forward to traveling to new destinations and venturing into parts
unknown, the fact that we can do so is the result of a long and contested struggle for the
democratization of the travel. Travel has indeed been democratized in the present, perhaps too
much so, considering many countries are combatting the scourge of over-tourism. This class will
be a different sort of magical mystery tour, using specific destinations to look at how and why
countries get us to travel, and weaving a discussion of the politics of tourism into the journey all
along the way.
 

Darren Zook

Darren C. Zook, PhD has taught for 16 years at UC Berkeley, and has been recognized numerous times for his contributions to education on campus. He teaches courses on comparative politics, security studies, human rights, and conflict resolution, and has extensive field experience in nearly every part of the world, including two trips to North Korea. In 2012 he was a Fulbright Research Scholar based in Singapore, conducting research on cybersecurity threats in the Asia-Pacific region.
