20th Century Britain and Pop Culture
Course | Registration opens 8/3/2026 7:00 AM PDT
These four lectures will focus on a different theme each week, providing insight into British politics, media, the nostalgia industry, and attitudes about race, class, and gender in Modern Britain. We will start with Britain at the peak of its power on the eve of World War I and end with the 1960s, in which the nation, no longer a global superpower, rebrands itself as the center of tourism and exports its pop culture around the world. The evolution of the monarchy and the scandals that plagued it in the era of growing democracy and tabloid-like media will also be discussed.
