There is something for everyone in the story of Lewis and Clark. Historians have called their expedition an “American Odyssey” and “our national epic of exploration.” Some have been drawn to the historical and scientific importance of the Voyage of Discovery, while others have focused on the sheer adventure and human drama of their exploits.

Together, the 16 members of our own LLC Corps of Discovery will study the origins, motivations, and outcomes of Lewis and Clark’s 2 1/2 year endeavor. Our focus will concentrate on important figures associated with the expedition, the arduous challenges of the Corps’ travels, their relations with various Native American tribes, and the lasting legacies their adventures have left in America to this day.

Format: All participants will be expected to lead a discussion or make a presentation on topics outlined in the syllabus. The coordinators will provide supplementary materials to complement our study as time permits. This is a Zoom video conferencing class.

Resources/Expenses: Members of our Corps should have read Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West by Stephen Ambrose (1997) prior to the first class. The book is available on Amazon, new or used at a minimal price, and in both Kindle and audiobook versions.

Coordinators: Bobbi and Joe Fisler, both retired educators and history buffs, have travelled extensively in the American West, most recently following the trail of Lewis and Clark. They got hooked!
