At the turn of the twentieth century, Antarctica became the scene of numerous expeditions. Their findings changed our understanding of the planet forever. This course will examine the explorers of the last continent to be discovered. Join us as we learn about the motivations, challenges, strengths and weaknesses of these heroic men.

Format: Participants will read selected chapters of the texts and lead weekly discussions. Active class participation and making a class presentation is expected. This is a Zoom video conferencing class.

Resources/Expenses: The text 1912 – The Year the World Discovered Antarctica by Chris Turney is available at Amazon Prime, used, for $3.95 and up. We suggest the book An Unsung Hero: Tom Crean – Antarctic Survivor by Michael Smith, as an optional supplement.
