Rhode Island’s southern shores and local ponds are a birding paradise in early winter. Join seasoned birders Bill Carpenter and Emily Westcott for a five week course (two Temple sessions and three field birding sessions) to learn more about loons, buffleheads, goldeneyes, mergansers, grebes, and harlequins, to name just a few. The first class will be in the Temple on 11/15. We will meet at field locations Nov 22,
Nov 29 and Dec 6. Our final Temple class will either be 12/13 or 12/20 if weather has forced a class cancellation.

Participants will provide their own transportation (they will be encouraged to carpool to sites in South County, Jamestown, and Middletown, as comfort levels allow) and should be able to walk up to a mile and a half. Binoculars are essential for a good experience. Bill and Emily have spotting scopes for shared viewing by all.

Format: The class consists of field trips and in person discussions. Presentations are not required.

Resources/Expenses: None, other than transportation costs.

Bill loves nature and science, belongs to the Skyscrapers, the local Astronomy club, and volunteers for the R. I. Audubon. His interest in animal cognition has been sparked in reading An Immense World…, on which his "An Immense World" course is based. In addition, Bill has coordinated courses on poetry, Jazz and winter waterfowl. He is a widely published poet and author of two books of poetry, Templates and more recently Imperfect Mirrors, Indelible Myths. An animated version of his poem Seasonal Nights was selected for an international online poetry film/poetry festival through REELpoetry 2020 out of Houston, TX.

Emily Westcott is a birding enthusiast who enjoys sharing the joys of this outdoor activity. She has co-coordinated this class many times before.
