The Italian Renaissance began in Florence but soon spread to all areas of Italy and most regions of Europe. Italian artists helped spread the ideas and philosophy of the Italian Renaissance through their art. Using a thematic format, we will explore the development of Italian art into the “high” Renaissance.

Themes: influence of Flemish art; rise of portraiture; women artists; portrayal of women; religious images, and others. Some artists we will look at are: Bellini, Tiziano, Tintoretto, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raffaello, Anguissola, Giorgione, Veronese. Neither artistic skill nor a background in art history is needed, just an interest in the topic.

Format: Each participant is requested to present and lead a one-hour discussion, choosing from a coordinator supplied selection of themes and artists.

Resources/Expenses: There is no textbook, but participants may be asked to read PDF documents and/or watch videos supplied/specified by the coordinator. No expenses are anticipated
