*Note: This course is also offered on Tuesday mornings on Zoom.

Time passes, cameras change, but our curiosity about the pursuit of “truth” in art persists. We will follow eight photographers into remote locations as well as central urban hubs in the U.S. Some films will be light and entertaining, while others will be profoundly impactful.

Our movies:
  • Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Lightning
  • Bill Cunningham New York
  • Garry Winogrand: All Things are Photographable
  • Faces, Places
  • Which Way is the Front Line from Here
  • The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Portrait Photography
  • Finding Vivian Maier
  • Through a Glass Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People
  • The Way I See It
  • The Automat
Format: Each week we will watch the scheduled film at home and discuss it in class. Two class members will collaborate on presenting one movie, each leading the discussion for one segment. Questions may be sent out ahead of time to help the class focus on particular aspects of the movie. Every class member will be a discussion leader.

Resources/Expenses: The films are available on Amazon Prime, Netflix, Kanopy and other streaming services. A small fee may be charged by Prime.
