The Westerns we grew up watching – sheriffs vs. outlaws and cowboys vs. Indians have changed drastically in the last forty years. Films in the course will range from the 1940s through the twenty-first century and will cover such topics as the plight of Native Americans and Latino Americans, justice served, and justice denied – there will even be some comedies. Join us in viewing Western films in an entirely new light.

Format: Sixteen films, two per week, will be offered for discussion. Participants will each take a film, give a presentation, and open the floor for discussion. Questions for discussion for class members will be sent out prior to classes whenever feasible.

Resources/Expenses: Most films are available for streaming at a minimal cost. Info on locations will be provided. Most are also available on DVD for borrowing from the state public library system, or from the Libraries’ Kanopy streaming service.
