For many lovers of Classical Music, the 20th Century can be a challenge. Comfortable with the mainstream world of art music – 1600-1870 – the music that follows can present many new hurdles. Radical shifts in style, wide ranges of new influence, and new philosophies all combine to make the music of the last 120 years a kaleidoscope in which we are alternately soothed and discomfited. This course will explore the broad outlines and trends that occurred during this time and will seek to better equip the listener with ways to further explore this music. Composers covered will include Bartok, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Hindemith, Britten, Shostakovich, Berg, Webern, Messiaen, Cage, Reich, Glass, and others.
Note: This class meets in-person at Temple Beth-El with the exception of the November 7 class, which will be held on Zoom.
Format: No musical background or knowledge is needed. The only requirement is an open ear, and willingness to listen to new music. Presentations from class members will be on the composers themselves, with no musical analysis required.
Resources/Expenses: None.
