Unquiet Women – Significant Voices in Classical Music

Class | Available (Membership Required)

Women have always been an important part of the musical landscape, but it is only recently that their contributions to the world of classical music has begun to be adequately acknowledged. In this course we will learn who some of these women are, with a focus on those who spurred significant changes. While these will mainly be composers, we will also learn about some performers who have, and are now, breaking new ground.

Format: Each class will begin with a discussion of the previous week’s listening. This will be followed by two presentations. Participants will choose a composer or performer, and present their bio and accomplishments, along with the challenges they face(d). After the presentations there will be an opportunity to hear and discuss music created by the women of that week’s focus. Each week links will be sent to allow further exploration of their music. No musical background is needed for the class.

Resources/Expenses: The only requirements are curiosity and Internet access.
