Join us in looking through Dutch 17th Century images to the culture behind them. Economic success paralleled a cultural flowering in painting during the era. Social life was relatively egalitarian. Urbanization was built on decentralized power, and Dutch Calvinism placed limits on corruption and displays of wealth. Learn how a painter’s gender could mold a scene of civic pride or morality. Discover how men and women appeared, acquired goods and structured their spaces.

Format: Each week there will be two presentations. Participants are urged to make a short presentation using images they select to show on the screen. Discussion is highly encouraged.

Resources/Expenses: Important: Access to a computer and the Internet is essential as is familiarity with PowerPoint.The coordinator may suggest reading material and online resources. No expenses anticipated.
