How Great Structures Go Up – And Sometimes Fall Down (IN-PERSON)
Class | CLASS FULL - Email info@lifelonglearningcollaborative.org to be added to the waitlist.
This is a hybrid class being held in-person and on Zoom.
THIS REGISTRATION IS FOR IN-PERSON AT TEMPLE BETH-EL.
In this reprise of last year’s Great Structures course, we will apply the same format to new content (so previous attendees are welcome to register again). We will examine engineering triumphs that created some of the world’s iconic structures and engineering failures that caused other would-be great structures to collapse.
Format: Participants will select a structure from a list of topics—or suggest a structure not on the list—and lead a one-hour session about it. This is engineering for non-engineers: we’ll look at the principles that led to success or failure in each structure—no math, but lots of photos, videos, and diagrams that bring the stories to life.
Resources/Expenses: First-time attendees should read Built: The Hidden Stories Behind Our Structures by structural engineer Roma Agrawal before the course begins. The book is available used, new or electronically for $6.00 and up at online sources.
