Recent Decisions of the United States Supreme Court: 2024-2025 Terms
Zoom Video Conference | Registration opens 5/12/2025 9:00 AM
In this course we will read and discuss opinions involving an array of topical social and political issues, including the immunity of a President from criminal prosecution, criminal liability for the interference with official governmental proceedings, the distribution and sale of the morning-after abortion pill, the government’s right to regulate air quality, the right of an American citizen’s husband to obtain a visa for permanent residence, the right of Starbucks employees to unionize, and congressional redistricting from the 2024 term.
There are also pending matters yet to be adjudicated involving a terrorist victim’s right to sue the PLO, a death row inmate’s right to DNA testing, whether a child of Muslim parents can be compelled to participate in gender and sex education, and others which will be published by June 30, the end of the Court term.
Format: Each student is encouraged but not required to choose a case to present to the class. Should a student wish to choose a case not included in the suggested syllabus, you are free to choose your own. You do not have to be a lawyer to read, understand, and explain a Supreme Court opinion. As citizens we all abide by these decisions and the jurists write so that all citizens can know the principle embodied in the opinions.
Resources/Expenses: Participants will need access to the Internet to review Supreme Court case materials provided by the Coordinator. No expenses are anticipated.
