Jewish Style Breads, Bagels, and Rolls

Class | Registration opens 12/1/2025 9:00 AM

MANDATORY WAIVER: Since LLC does not maintain insurance for off-site courses held outside of the Temple, participants must sign a waiver to participate. Look for the waiver link in your registration confirmation email.

In this course you will learn how to use traditional ingredients to hand make nine different Jewish style breads and rolls: such as challah, Kaiser rolls, bagels, rye bread and pumpernickel. The goal: everyone will be able to make these at home. In this third offering of the course there will be new variants of pita bread and sourdough.

Format: The coordinator will demonstrate how to mix, knead, proof, shape, and bake a product. Each week every class member will mix and knead the product so it will be ready to bake at home. Class members who made the previous week’s product at home will bring samples to taste and talk for around fifteen minutes about any problems they encountered. You will also learn how to maintain a sour dough starter and use it in breads and bagels. Wear old clothes to class and bring an apron. Expect to get messy!

Resources/Expenses: We’ll use some specialized ingredients, including rye, first clear, high gluten flours. Each class member will receive five pounds of each type of flour. (Note: $30 material costs will be collected at the first class.)
