Living with Community

Class | Registration opens 7/27/2026 9:00 AM

We all know that living with community is essential, especially as we age. Our class will begin by examining the concept of home and what it means to each of us. From there, we will explore some of the approximately 3,000 established “intentional communities” in the U.S., which include cohousing, ecovillages, spiritual communities, and more. Class members will select one community to focus on, doing research online and reporting back to the class. Also, we will take a look at the Village Common of RI and other local groups that offer fellowship for seniors. In addition to lively discussions, we plan to enjoy scrumptious snacks, have fun, and forge a sense of community. Come join us!

Format: Reports/Presentations (no slide shows required) with two class members collaborating. Lots of class discussion.

Resources/Expenses: None.

Coordinators: Helen Hawkins has enjoyed membership in LLC for 16 years. In recent years, she led several classes on movies. Cohousing has been an interest for decades. Terry Lassar started taking LLC classes soon after moving to Providence. Early in her career she covered housing and real estate development issues for the DC-based Urban Land Institute. Well before then, she taught English literature classes at the University of Virginia’s School of Continuing Education.
