America began with the words “we hold these choose to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…” The Declaration of Independence
founded us on equality rather than ethnicity, liberty rather than race. Though America was conceived from the ideals of equality and democracy, it was also country born on the slave trade’s sea of misery. Slavery is war - a war that came to America nearly 2 centuries before 1776. This war came culminated when we turned on each other from 1861 to 1865 over what “the people” and “created equal” meant.
