BS24-212 Classic Screwball Comedies: Kate Hepburn, Cary Grant and Spencer Tracy
Bartlesville | This course is completed
Let’s look at four classic screwball comedies spanning 1938-1948, during which the young actress Katherine Hepburn forged a new kind of comedian — the well-educated, somewhat patrician Smart Girl, who meets her match in two very different leading men: the debonair Cary Grant and the curmudgeonly Spencer Tracy. We will consider how social acceptance of strong female leads shifted during these years, from ditsy heiresses to sharp-thinking career women. Join us for Bringing Up Baby (1938), The Philadelphia Story (1940), Woman of the Year (1942), and State of the Union (1948).
