The History of Rock

Rock music was pivotal in social change from the repressed 50s, through the counterculture of the 60s to today. Originating from a blend of black blues and white country, rock evolved through various strains. We'll explore each: Rock-a-Billy, Rhythm and Blues, Doo-Wop, Schlock-Rock, Folk, the British Invasion, Woodstock and the mid-70s. The course continues with Punk, the 80s, Grunge and the death of rock 'n' roll carried out by top names of today. Discover how rock music became the soundtrack of America and the world.
John Hill
John Hill is a songwriter, educator and record producer. As a staff producer for Columbia Records, he produced Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Dr. John, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, The Buckinghams, Raven, Catfish, Ian & Sylvia, David Bromberg and Susan Christie. He earned his bachelor's degree at Temple University in Philadelphia and did graduate work in music there and at the University of Pennsylvania. He has also studied at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique in Paris and the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He recently earned his Master of Fine Arts at Bennington College in Vermont. As a songwriter, his work has been recorded by The Grassroots, The Buckinghams, The Staples Singers, Bill Deal and the Rhondells and Pacific Gas & Electric (the band, not the utility). His song “Fifty in Five” was a top ten record in Australia by the Hilltop Hoods in 2012.
