[NEW CLASS] This class will provide a narrative overview of modern spiritualism, the 19th-century practice of contacting deceased spirits. We will cover the major influences on and the forerunners of spiritualism; the Fox Sisters’ rise to fame in 1848; and the spread of spiritualism during the Civil War era. The lecture will also cover the decline of spiritualism between 1880 and 1930 as well as the movement’s current legacy. Audio/Visual, Discussion, Lecture

Daniel Gorman

Daniel (Dan) Gorman Jr. is an historian of American religion and culture. Currently he is a postdoctoral associate at the University of Rochester where he also received his Ph.D. His dissertation is a cultural biography of a 19th-century spiritualist.
