[NEW COURSE] This course offers a selection of topics providing insight into some of the creative forces and historical contexts that have shaped jazz across generations. Topics include how jazz works—the fundamentals; the groundbreaking contributions of J. J. Johnson to modern jazz trombone; an inventive, non-chronological journey through the evolution of jazz piano; diverse interpretations of two classic standards Body and Soul and You Go to My Head; the impact of Blue Note Records and the legacy of the Port of Harlem Jazzmen; and pioneering figures who elevated jazz violin.
