F46W Ikebana: The Japanese Art of Flower Arranging (In-Person)

In-Person | Available (Membership Required)

[NEW COURSE] Ikebana is practiced worldwide, and millions of people have tried their hand at it. In this hands-on course, we will demonstrate four of the many schools of Ikebana and work with students to do their own flower arrangements in the manner of each school. Instructors will aid and gently critique each student’s work.  Audio/Visual, Discussion, Lecture, Workshop

  • *This registration item is in-person only; there is not an online section of this course.*

This course has a required $20 fee, payable online when you register, for a suiban (a shallow, basin-like container) and kenzan (a pin frog, aka a flower frog, used to hold flowers in place) that will be provided by the course leaders.

    Enrollment Limit: 13

  • Additional Required Supplies to Bring to Class: flowers (types/amounts will be specified in the weekly class details) in a bucket with about 2” of water, heavy-duty scissors or garden clippers, a small bowl to cut stems in, a one-gallon jug of water with a lid, and a small clean towel for resting your clippers on and for cleaning up.

    Extended Description:

    • Day 1: Introduction to ikebana with a lecture and simultaneous demonstrations with explanations by the four teachers. Each teacher will create a basic arrangement in her school, followed by an intermediate arrangement, and ending with a free style arrangement. We will end with a discussion about which of the basic or intermediate arrangements the students would like to try in the subsequent workshop days. The workshop instructions will be sent to students in an attachment. In the workshops, the teacher will demonstrate and explain the arrangement, then the students will create their own version of the arrangement, and finally the teacher will gently critique the student arrangements.
    • Day 2: Workshop by Gail Newman, Ichiyo School
    • Day 3: Workshop by Faye Phillips, Sogetsu School
    • Day 4: Workshop by Fauzia Jamshed, Hijiri Ikenobo School
    • Day 5: Workshop by Saskia Eller, Ohara School
