[NEW CLASS] Most of us believe that our basic rights as Americans come from the Bill of Rights which is partly true. Many states, especially in the South, ignored these rights before the Civil War. Passed during Reconstruction and pushed through by “Radical Republicans”, the 14th Amendment defined citizenship and “equal protection under the law”, but it did not guarantee equal protection for every American.
