Tour the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Appellate Division, Fourth Judicial Department

50 East Ave., Rochester, NY

Judge Stephen Lindley will give us a tour, and we will sit in on live arguments at the Appellate Court on East Avenue. We will make carpooling available for this event.

New York State has a unique court structure. One tier of that is on East Avenue in Rochester, named the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Fourth Department. There are four Appellate Departments in the state, the Fourth Department in Rochester has jurisdiction over 22 counties in central and western New York.

The Constitution of 1894 created the Appellate Division as the intermediate court in the state. It resolves appeals from judgments or orders of the superior courts of original jurisdiction. It hears appeals from the State's trial courts, including the lower court called the Supreme Court, as well as Family Court, Court of Claims, Surrogate Court, and other county courts. The appellate court has the power to review issues of both law and fact in civil and criminal matters. If any of the cases of the Appellate Division were to be appealed, they would go to the state’s highest court – the State Court of Appeals in Albany.

More details will be coming soon including registration, car pooling, and optional lunch.
