[NEW COURSE] Everyone knows a lot of these poems, right? Well, there may be a bit more to the text and background of these old chestnuts. We’ll take a look at a batch of northern-perspective lyrics about the Civil War including the Battle Hymn of the Republic, Barbara Frietchie, Dunbar’s The Colored Soldiers, the introduction to Song of Hiawatha, The New Colossus (the poem on the Statue of Liberty), The Shooting of Dan McGrew, and possibly poem(s) by Whitman. These are easy reading on the literal surface with interesting twists of language and culture in more detail. No texts to purchase; poems will be sent via email before class.
