F12M Design and User Experience: An Insight into the Creative Process (Hybrid/In-Person)
In-Person | Available (Membership Required)
[NEW CLASS] Have you ever wondered why everyday products—dining utensils, lamps, running shoes, office chairs, or cars—look and function the way they do? Why did they appeal to you when you bought them, and are you still satisfied using them? This course offers an inside look at the creative process behind product and environmental design, exploring how professionals balance function, aesthetics, and usability when developing the things we use every day. A primary focus will be design for accessibility and health care. The course will also feature examples of professional design work alongside collaborative student projects from RIT’s programs in industrial design, engineering, and related disciplines. Course participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the thought and craft that go into the design process. Lecture

Dan Harel
Dan Harel’s fascination with design began as a child’s simple curiosity for the way things work and with a wonder for the way they look. With both undergraduate and graduate degrees in design, he has been a professional designer for more than three decades with a passion for designing both consumer and commercial products that merge customer understanding and methodologies for creating innovative solutions. At Eastman Kodak Company his work focused on design of digital imaging goods; since 2011 he has served as an adjunct professor of industrial design at RIT where, in addition to teaching responsibilities, he leads studios that aim to provide solutions for accessibility and health care needs. In 2025 he published NETWORK: An Inclusive Approach to Design with a Focus on Access Technologies and Health Care.
