F44W History Through Song and (a Bit of) Story (Hybrid/In-Person)

[NEW COURSE] Folk songs, broadsides, newspaper poetry, even commercial songs often describe historical events, and, sometimes, do so correctly. In this course we will view the lyrics and listen to 20th century recordings of selected songs from the 17th through the 20th centuries (and perhaps into the 21st) and consider what they reveal about events or sensibilities of past times. The melodies are often pleasing and some are quite memorable. They can help us remember the history being described, or fictionalized, and reading the lyrics at the same time can help with understanding. The focus will be on American history but not exclusively so. Audio/Visual, Discussion, Lecture

Peter Zavon
Peter Zavon is a retired Occupational Hygienist (OSHA stuff). During much of his 30 years with Xerox, he developed and presented PowerPoint-based instructional and training courses on a wide variety of topics. For 10 years he was an adjunct professor in Occupational Hygiene at the U of R.
