F02M The First Century of Recorded Jazz: A Historical Survey (In-Person Only)

[NEW COURSE] [MULTI-PART SERIES] This course will survey the first 100 years of recorded jazz. The first jazz recording was made by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band for the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1917. From that starting point we will follow jazz’s development highlighting major styles, movements, and trends. The survey will be informed by historically important recordings featuring the great instrumental soloists and bandleaders such as Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Dave Brubeck, and John Coltrane.
