F59Th 800 Words: Writing a Column (In-Person Only)

[NEW COURSE] We’ve all got things to say, and, if you are a newspaper columnist, you usually have about 800 words to get your point across. We’ll study and practice the art and strategy of putting those 800 words together, working on plot (yes, columns have plots), voice, and closure. We’ll read lots of columns and write them, too, addressing various points of view—political, social, and personal—all in 800 words. Enrollment Limit: 12 Writing, Peer Group

Jim Memmott, a retired reporter and senior editor at the Democrat and Chronicle and a journalism instructor at the University of Rochester, writes the weekly column Remarkable Rochester for the D&C, focusing on the connections between Rochester’s past and present and on the people who have made significant contributions to the area.
