[NEW COURSE] Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) was one of the 20th century’s most astonishing musical innovators. During a career spanning more than 60 years, he repeatedly surprised audiences by reinventing his musical style—from Russian fairy tales and lush ballets to elegant neoclassical works and powerful sacred music. At the core of his achievement stands The Rite of Spring (1913) whose Paris premiere provoked one of the most famous incidents in music history. But Stravinsky was far more than the composer of one revolutionary work. Each class will combine Robert Greenberg’s engaging (and humorous) lectures with performances and video excerpts from some of the world’s finest musicians and dance companies. We will also hear insights from conductors and teachers including Leonard Bernstein, Alan Gilbert, and Gerard Schwarz, who will help us listen. We will be able to experience Stravinsky’s music as well as to understand it. We will follow Stravinsky’s artistic journey through colorful orchestral works, groundbreaking ballets, theatrical masterpieces, and masterful collaborations with Sergei Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes.
