[NEW COURSE] This course will introduce the slave South prior to the Civil War as an example of the structure and effects of an oligarchy: how it came to assume that status; what the Union government did through the Civil War Reconstruction to bring fairness and equity to the government of the South; and how and why that effort failed. We will also use the example of that failure to discuss the ways the current government is approaching an oligarchy and what we might do about that.
