[NEW COURSE] Vampires didn’t begin with Bram Stoker’s Dracula. In this course we will examine the first vampire stories in the English language (to include The Vampyre, The Black Vampyre, and Carmilla) as well as watch essential films in the corpus of over 700 titles available (such as Nosferatu, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Let the Right One In). We will discuss the evolution of the Vampire character, what its portrayal says about society, and discuss why its presentation in literature frequently introduces themes that were frowned upon in polite society. What does the very first vampire story have to do with Frankenstein? Is the Black Vampire one of the earliest stories that contains an anti-slavery theme?
