Unbeknownst to many, China is the home of over forty-million Muslims who play an integral role in the daily life of Chinese citizens and in policy-making decisions. Kelly Hammond, an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas, will introduce the history of Islam in China starting in the Tang Dynasty all the way up to the present, and explore the nuances and varieties of Chinese Islamic practices. Part of the discussion will also focus around the current struggle of the Uyghurs, a Muslim ethnic minority who live in western China.

  • ONLY bottled water is allowed in the classrooms at UPT

Dr. Hammond is an Assistant Professor in the history department at the University of Arkansas. Her work focuses on the history of Islam in Asia. She recently received her Ph.D. from Georgetown University and she is working on a book called “China’s Muslims and Japan’s Empire"
