Volunteer organizations such as churches, PTA’s, non-prots and civic clubs operate through committees by the dozen involving countless hours of meetings. However, sometimes people leave these meetings feeling frustrated because the goals were not clear, consensus was not reached, time was wasted and some ideas were disrespected.
Dr. Ellis Melton will offer tips on ‘making meetings matter’ so that committee members might actually look forward to the next meeting because so much was accomplished and their own ideas and feelings were respected. Participants will look at alternatives to voting, making effective agendas, and dealing with difficult people. We will learn what leaders need to do before, during and after the meetings, from room set up, use of visuals, and following up strategies.

  • This class meets at the UA UPT-W campus. Please adhere to the location's policies:
  • Only bottled water is allowed inside of the classroom. No coffee or other beverages.
  • If you need assistance of any kind, please contact the OLLI office at 575-4545.

From my own experience in churches, schools, and civic clubs I realized that much time and effort was being wasted in meetings that did more harm than good. I became trained in organizational development, specializing in planning and conducting all kinds of meetings, especially committee meetings, where untrained volunteers were asked to lead others. I have conducted workshops in this topic all over the world, from international schools in Asia and Africa, to churches and non-profits in my home town of Fayetteville.
