2017 is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Launched with the (in)famous posting of the 95 Theses on the castle door at Wittenberg (an event that itself may be apocryphal), Martin Luther ushered in a movement in Christian and world history with global implications. Not only did the Reformation permanently change Christianity in the West, it also changed political structures, educational institutions, social service organizations and the piety of people. It took the faith to the people in unprecedented ways but also paved the way for secular society.
